The Northwest Territories flag was adopted on Jan 1, 1969.
The blue vertical stripes represent the lakes and waters of the Terrritories and the white stands for the snow and ice. In the centre is the shield of arms, granted on Feb. 24, 1956. The white symbolizes the polar icepack, the blue wavy stripe the North-west Passage, the green the forested areas and the red the tundra. The head of an arctic fox represents the local fauna. The yellow rectanges symbolize mineral riches.
The flag is made of 100% polyester. They also have two brass grommets for easy attachment.
